  1. ASTM A 666 "Austenitic stainless steel sheet, strip, plate and flat bar for
  2. structural applications" defines the properties of annealed and cold rolled
  3. stainless steel intended for use in load carrying structures.

  5. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) prepared and issued an extensive
  6. set of design guidelines based on ASTM A 666 applicable to cold formed and
  7. cold rolled stainless steels intended for use for load carrying purposes in
  8. buildings and other statically loaded structures.  These design guidelines are
  9. also intended for structures subject to dynamic effects when appropriate
  10. allowances are made for dynamic effects.

  12. Type 304 stainless steel is the grade most commonly used in structural
  13. applications.  The 1972 version of ASTM A 666 gives the properties of four
  14. grades A & B, annealed; C, 1/4 hard; and D, 1/2 hard.  The 1984 and later
  15. editions of ASTM A 666 gives these properties in Table 3 under annealed, 1/16,
  16. 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 hard but with no reference to the letter designations
  17. used in the 1972 edition and the AISI design manual.
